TMC MP Mitali Bag Alleges Stone-Pelting Attack in Hooghly; BJP Rejects Claim, Calls It “Staged Drama”
A political clash in West Bengal’s Hooghly district intensifies after TMC MP Mitali Bag alleges a stone-pelting attack by BJP workers, while the BJP denies the claim and counters with allegations of violence by TMC supporters. Authorities have launched an inquiry amid rising election tensions.
In a Facebook Live broadcast, an emotional Bag claimed that miscreants, allegedly backed by BJP, hurled stones at her vehicle as it passed the election office of BJP candidate Prashanta Digar. She stated that the attack shattered the vehicle’s window panes while she was seated in the front, accompanied by party workers in the rear seats.
Describing the incident as targeted violence, Bag said that stick-wielding BJP supporters blocked her path and launched the attack. Referring to her identity as a Dalit woman from the Bagdi community, she accused the BJP of hypocrisy regarding women’s safety and demanded accountability from the Election Commission. She also questioned remarks made by Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Agarwal, urging him to verify facts on the ground.
Following the incident, Bag reported injuries from shattered glass and was taken to a local health centre, where medical staff assisted her inside for treatment. The Trinamool Congress circulated her video on social media, condemning the alleged attack as evidence of political intimidation. Party state general secretary Kunal Ghosh asserted that the people of West Bengal would respond decisively through their votes.
However, the BJP strongly denied the allegations. Party spokesperson Debjit Sarkar claimed that no such attack occurred and instead accused TMC supporters of assaulting BJP workers at the party office. He alleged that the incident was being misrepresented to divert attention.
Echoing this stance, former BJP Arambagh unit president Biman Ghosh alleged that BJP workers were attacked during a campaign supporting candidate Prashanta Digar. He claimed that miscreants led by local TMC leader Sanjay Khan assaulted party workers using sticks, bricks, rods, and firearms, leaving nearly 50 people injured, with 20 hospitalised. He further stated that the BJP candidate’s vehicle was also vandalised and accused Bag of fabricating the incident to suppress these developments.
In response, Sanjay Khan dismissed the BJP’s allegations, claiming that BJP workers entered the locality and hurled explosives targeting residents belonging to a minority community.
Amid the conflicting claims, an official from the Chief Electoral Officer’s office confirmed that a report has been sought on the incident. Authorities are reviewing closed-circuit television footage and examining the Facebook Live video shared by Bag. Central forces have been deployed and are currently stationed at the location to maintain order.
The incident underscores the escalating tensions and volatile atmosphere in West Bengal during the final phase of election campaigning, with both major political parties trading serious allegations of violence, intimidation, and misinformation.
